A STROLL, A RAMBLE, A TRUDGE..gardening in Vermont..an old gardener looking for new tricks while moving from the purely floral to jabbing at sustainability via vegetables and fruits.

the photo says it all
OK, I'm getting concerned now. It's April 15th and it's still snowing. The expected nor'easter is about to hit the coast with promised flooding, high winds and power outages and here in the mountains we can additionally expect upwards to a couple feet of snow, charming. It's not that I haven't had a lifelong love of snow, I have, I really have... but since I grow and sell plants for a living it's become a bit problematic. The weeks of gloom and sunlessness make for rather unhappy seedlings threatening to damp off and end it all. "Damp Off", that'll be my new substitute for "Fuck Off".

absolutely unsure
found a great list of oxymorons to peruse...here's the link http://www.oxymoronlist.com/
otherwise I'm absolutely unsure that I feel anything earth shattering about another winter birthday passing. We've gotten a few more inches of insulating snow and I am reminded of the kindness of those burr-like creatures I call friends.

Global Warming/Global dimming
can't remember where this came from but it sez it all as far as I'm concerned."before my life went dim"..saw an interesting video on global dimming on GoogleVideo I think that came originally from the BBC. Yet another hopeful and uplifting view of the near future..finally a reasonable explanation for my straining zinnias.

Snow (or the lack thereof)
Here in Vermont we've gotten little to no snow this winter thus far though I imagine we'll get some nice wet dumpings come March or maybe even an old school whopper of a blizzard in February. As much as I have bitched about the inconvenience and cold I have to come clean with my 'real' emotions concerning the white stuff..I love it..always have. I could complicate it all up but I never feel as safe as when I am home and there is a storm raging, the roads temporarily impassable. Or later when there is a deep snow that muffles sound with a complimenting sky screeching in Utah blue.

'footprint of the american chicken'
yeah, that expression used to irk the hell out of me back in the dark ages, (late 60's early 70's), when I was a teen though I must admit at the time, despite my leftie hippie leanings, even I thought it was a bit hokey. I never drew the 'peace sign' on anything nor wore any clothing with said design. I discounted the tie-dyed look for somber black befitting my skeptic status. So imagine my bemusement when I tell you I've CHOSEN to slap this on the back of my car. And, dare I say it, I'm proud to have it there.
it's still sunday afternoon in America
in time of war the law falls silent - Cicero
what I've been wondering about is why are the streets silent? It's been explained in blog after blog; no draft, no incentive, it's not happening here, I'm an ADD baby easily distracted by our enslavement to the cult of celebrity wrought by a shameless media. We seem to be a populus beyond numb, beyond denial. I've a notion all that'll change as the feces hurtles ever closer to the fan. I can hear those blades whirring, can you?

the red shed when the sun shines
my favorite word when I was fifteen years old
once more into the breach..which is ridiculous since I've yet to enter the breach or the blogosphere at all. That being said, with the technological skills of a Neanderthal, I trudge forward:
